Old Dominion gained popularity in the wake of two albums of catchy material. Their eponymous third release stays the course and offers a dozen songs adapted to the radio. The hyper positive single “Make it Sweet” leads the way with an ode to the brightest side of everything. Most of the tracks are upbeat but, ironically, there is no official party anthem or even a drinking song. The closest they get is “American Style,” which is loaded with standard innocent imagery …
Right off the bat, the title from Old Dominion’s album “Happy Endings” is much better than “Meat and Candy”, his previous effort. (“Meat” in an album title? Really?) But also artistically, the OD sequel shows signs of growth. That said, however, there is nothing in this new version as immediately eye-catching as “Snapback”. Nonetheless, the vocal-only harmonies introducing “Not Everything’s About You” are a beautiful thing. …
