SOUTH HAVEN – Seven miles from downtown South Haven, nestled on 75 acres of wilderness, an upscale campground is ready for reservations.
Off Map, owned by Mike Doyle and Sam Shanley, offers disconnected vacations and sleeping under the stars, without the headaches.
“It’s basically an outdoor experience for people who don’t have the desire or the equipment to go rustic tent camping,” Doyle said. “I think that opens the idea to people who are a little overwhelmed by the idea of pitching a tent.”
Off Map customers don’t need to live without phone chargers, lanterns or fans. Each safari tent is equipped with a bed, fresh linens, a wood-burning stove, a seating area and bedside tables.
“There is no work for them to do,” Doyle said. “They just introduced themselves and everything is ready for them.”
Public baths are available, as well as common areas with fireplaces.
“We have booked a fair amount of live music throughout the summer,” said Doyle. “We have lawn games, like Bocce Ball and Cornhole and Frisbee Toss. Some campgrounds may have playgrounds and pools, but we have intentionally taken a different direction.”
Visitors can explore meadows, forests and walking trails during the day. They can also visit South Haven or Saugatuck, about a 25-minute drive north.
“We have found that a lot of people use their tent as a home base,” Doyle said. “If they stay two or three nights, they will spend their days exploring the shores of the lake in South Haven, Saugatuck or the Netherlands. It’s a unique way to see the seaside towns.”

Off Map was born from an idea Shanley had while traveling across the country.
“He saw a lot of cool places and saw people doing that kind of thing out west,” Doyle said. “This was especially common in national parks. They were full most of the time – he couldn’t even make a reservation – and we thought it would be great to bring something like that to the Midwest.”
Off Map currently offers 12 tents, although Doyle and Shanley hope to expand in the future. Ten units have king-size beds and the other units have three twin beds. The price fluctuates according to the season, but the going rate is currently between $ 150 and $ 200 per night.
“We plan, from now on, to remain open until October,” Doyle said. “It’s always a little weather dependent. In terms of current bookings, we’ve had a lot of interest in summer weekends. July weekends are full which is encouraging and exciting. . “
