Nick Cannon provides more context behind his new song about Mariah Carey

Nick Cannon provided a little more context for his new song “Alone,” where he sings about his ex-wife, Mariah Carey.

“I released a song on Valentine’s Day for all the people who are lonely on Valentine’s Day,” he said on his talk show Wednesday. “I did a song called ‘Alone’ and it sampled one of my favorite Mariah Carey songs, ‘Love Takes Time.’ So I think people put the two and the two together. They tried to say – everyone was saying this was my song to try and get Mariah back.

However, the 40-year-old said it wasn’t really about trying to get her back, but about taking responsibility for how he treated her. “I probably had the greatest situation with my dream girl and screwed it up,” he continued. “To be honest and vulnerable…the song wasn’t really about getting her back. It was taking ownership of what I did as a man, owning my flaws and expressing them through song.

Cannon said he knew it was “impossible” to get back together with Carey, but considered songwriting a form of therapy. He also joked that he used “Kanye West’s energy” to win back his ex-wife, although it didn’t work.

“Alone” is the first single from his upcoming R&B mixtape. Raw NB the band explicit. In a statement regarding the project, Cannon said, “It’s as raw as it gets.”

The former couple had been together for eight years and share 10-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe. Cannon is expecting her eighth child, a baby boy with girlfriend Bre Tiesi.
