Gray DeLisle and Eddie Clendening have released an extensive string of singles, reinventing children’s music with each witty new track. Shortly after their debut, The Roughhousers’ “Azucar” covered children’s love for all things sugar. Their latest song, “Chicken Fingers,” focuses on another classic childhood food with a tune that’s sure to appeal to young and old alike.
Think back to the 60s, when The Strangeloves gave the world the hit “I Want Candy.” This ever-popular classic was covered by many other artists decades later, and no matter which version was played, the song continues to excite kids and adults alike today. Sound familiar? This is because, by nature, The Roughhousers have the same timeless qualities and similar sound with “Chicken Fingers”. There are no musical age limits while delivering a savory rather than sugary boogie-woogie melody and a catchy instrumental. DeLisle was inspired to write this single by her 5-year-old daughter, who wondered how chickens manage without their delicious fingers. So, in typical The Roughhousers fashion, the lyrics explore various comedic scenarios in which the fictional, feathered, and fingerless animals find themselves as a result.
The Roughhousers’ love of chicken fingers is evident in the accompanying “Chicken Fingers” visual. In the first half of the video, much of DeLisle’s voice comes through a rubber chicken “microphone”, and in the second half she continues to sing and dance in a chicken mask while continuing to shake the rubber chicken with great pleasure. Don’t worry – Clendening also takes time to toggle the Chicken Mask. The Roughhousers end up performing at a bustling restaurant, aptly named after the band and the food title held in high esteem here. Finally, there are animated chickens everywhere.
