Del McCoury, Billy Strings and Sierra Hull join Travelin McCourys in Nashville

The guest-filled concert showcased three generations of stellar bluegrass.

The Travelin ‘McCourys performed at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville on Friday night. The bluegrass roster welcomed Del McCoury, Billy Strings and Sierra Hull midway through their set to an incredible night featuring three generations of stellar bluegrass.
The sit-ins started with Billy Strings joining The Travelin ‘McCoury’s for Peter Rowan’s classic “Midnight Moonlight”. Bass player Alain Bartram led the group through the first two verses with the mandolinist Ronnie mccoury join him on the choruses. The extensive solo section started with banjoist Rob mccoury followed by Ronnie. Billy would take his turn in the fourth slot and roll out a classic Billy solo that ran through everything from bluegrass and blues to rock riffs to a good music video before the violinist. Jason carter brought the jam home.
The “Long Journey Home” standard followed before bluegrass legend and Ronnie and Rob’s dad, Del McCoury, joined to play guitar and sing along with his incredible vocals on “I’m Afraid I Forgot The Feeling” , which appeared on The Del McCoury Band’s 2003 album. , It’s just the night. Billy then led the way on Bill Monroe’s “Can’t You Hear Me Calling” with Del joining in on the high harmonies. Then Del walked over to the mic for his own bluegrass classic, âBeauty Of My Dreams,â with Ronnie joining him on the chorus.
Mandolinist Sierra Hull, whose band opened the show, joined in the fun for an instrumental excursion featuring double violins, a lightning-fast solo from Strings as well as a Hull run to the mando. The standard “Rollin ‘In My Sweet Baby’s Arms” closed the set and saw Del, Ronnie and Billy all take to the mic. Travelin ‘McCoury’s, Del, Billy and Sierra would all take the stage for a encore of âLoose Lucyâ from the Grateful Dead. Ronnie sang the first track and also delivered a solo on his electric mandolin after a blues run from Billy before wrapping up the song and the evening.
